Canadians are living longer and longer, and for many, saving for retirement is essential.

 

Your RRSP’s contribution limit is determined by 18% of your prior year’s reported income up to a defined contribution limit indexed to the annual increase in the average wage. Most types of investments can be held in an RRSP, including stocks, bonds, exchange-traded funds, mutual funds, and exempt market investments.

Pay less income tax while building your savings

When Canadians take advantage of RRSP contributions, they will receive either a tax refund, or a lower tax bill for the calendar year. The contributions made are subject to taxation when funds are withdrawn; but the amount of tax paid is dependent on your income at that time. This allows Canadians to contribute up to your allowable limit when your taxable income is higher, and withdrawal funds when your taxable income is lower.

Investments that grow within your RRSP account are tax-free until the date of withdrawal. This is a secondary avenue for Canadians to reach savings goals through RRSP tax strategies - not only will taxes be deferred for base income, but invested funds within the account are also sheltered.
